From the chronicle of the monastery.

ist7Let us open the book entitled "The description of St. John the Theologian Coenobitic Monastery which is situated in Ryazan Diocese". It was written in the century before last. In the chapter "Remarkable events, which happened in the cloister" we can read the following: "Wonderful signs of patronage given by St. Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian are considered the recoveries of believers which happened after they prayed with deep faith at the waters of the so called Holy Spring. People call so a pool, something like a native well, over which a stone chapel is built nowadays."

thumb_ist8The thing is that it had become impossible by that time to hold back the information about wonderful cases of recoveries from eyes diseases and many other illnesses. The dwellers of the nearby villages had come here since old times and brought babies seized with various diseases. They washed their faces, bathed in the waters of the Holy Spring, took the water to their homes and recovered. The Father Superior of the monastery at that time Archimandrite Vitaly informed the Eparchy authorities of several cases of the latest recoveries.

It happened in 1872 on the eve of the Patron Saint’s Day of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian. Anna Egorova of 22 from the village of Kuz’minskoye had suffered from physical sickness and possession for four years, that’s why she shivered at the sound of the bells ringing and lost consciousness and cried during the Divine Liturgy.
