Since the April of 1960 Father Abel had again served in Ryazan region. In 1969 he became an archimandrite, the senior priest of Ryazan Cathedral.

On the 17th of February 1970 with the blessing of His Holiness the Patriarch Archimandrite Abel was deputed by the Department for External Church Relations to the Holy Mount Athos in Greece to carry out coenobitic obedience in the Russian Monastery of Saint Panteleimon.

14The coenobitic obedience at the Holy Mount lasted for nearly nine years. In 1978 when Father Abel was already the Hegumen of the Russian Monastery of Saint Panteleimon, he went to Russia to take part in the funeral and Office for the Dead of his friend Metropolitan Nicodemus (Rotov), but he had not managed to return to the Holy Mount any more.

His Greek passport was “lost” by certain authorities. He had to retrieve it. Metropolitan Juvenaliy, who was the head of the Department for External Church Relations, however, conveyed to Father Abel the instruction of the supreme church authorities which said that he had to stay in Russia. Metropolitan  Juvenaliy always took care of Father Abel to comply with the request of the deceased Metropolitan Nicodemus. Soon after that Archimandrite Abel fell seriously ill, but by God's mercy he gradually recovered from the illness and was able to serve again.

In 1979 he was admitted to the clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church and appointed the honorary senior priest of Ryazan Cathedral of Saint Boris and Gleb and the father confessor of the eparchy.

On the 16th of May 1989 by the decision of the Holy Synod Archimandrite Abel was appointed the father superior of St. John the Theologian Monastery in Ryazan eparchy which had just been given back to the Church. During the 15 years of his administration the monastery which had been lying in ruins emerged from desolation.
